Public Consumption

Where Can You Actually Smoke?

"Legal state" does not mean "legal everywhere." The patchwork of local consumption ordinances is where most cannabis tourists get fined.

Last updated: April 8, 2026

State legalization sets the broad framework, but local municipalities control where you can actually consume. A city can — and many do — ban public consumption entirely even within a legal state. Below are the rules last updated April 8, 2026 for eight major cannabis tourism destinations.

Three types of restricted zones apply everywhere: federal property (national parks, post offices, courthouses), within 1,000 feet of a school or daycare, and inside any vehicle regardless of whether it's moving.
